A concussion is a brain injury triggered by a blow to the head, this causes the brain to move around in the skull which may result in swelling, chemical changes and brain damage. Although concussions generally heal within 1-2 weeks, during this period many complications can occur. Typically, patients with concussions suffer form, dizziness, persistent headaches, nausea, ringing in ears, neck pain, and they may have difficulty concentrating.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Feeling of heaviness in the head or headache
  • Vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Delayed response to questions
  • Temporary loss of consciousness
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss
  • Dizziness or “seeing stars”
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Nausea

Causes

A concussion occurs when there is swelling or bleeding in or and around the brain. This has a negative impact on brain function. These implications generally go away after some time. However, bleeding in the brain can be fatal therefore, it is important to go see a doctor after having a traumatic blow to the head. Additionally, symptoms may be delayed therefore, in some cases it can take some time to know if you are suffering from a concussion.

Prevention:

  • Teaching others about concussions: Educate coaches and parents on methods used towards concussion prevention.
  • Training regularly: Exercise regularly to toughen your leg muscles and improve your poise in order to lower your chances of being impacted by a strong hit.
  • Wearing protections when in sports: Wear head protection when snowboarding, bicycling, motorcycling, playing contact sports or participating in any other recreational activity that may result in a head injury.
  • Monitor your children: To lower the risk of head injuries among children, block off stairways and install window guards.
  • Fasten your seat belt: Wearing a seat belt may prevent serious injuries, especially head injuries during a traffic accident.
  • Making your home safe: Accidents at home are the leading cause of the head injuries.
